Autumn above Studland Bay
The coast exhales
There's a particular magic to the Dorset coast in autumn. The morning mist rolls over Studland Bay and Old Harry Rocks emerges from it like something from a painting. The beaches empty out, the coast path quietens, and the light - that low, golden, autumn light - makes the whole Jurassic Coast look freshly made.
The sea stays surprisingly swimmable well into October for the brave. The rest of us can watch from the terrace with a coffee, or the bar with something stronger.
Step outside
the Jurassic Coast, off-peak
Walk to Old Harry Rocks through morning mist, wander down to a near-empty Studland beach, or take the chain ferry across to Brownsea Island - autumn is one of the best times to spot its famous red squirrels as they busy themselves for winter.
Corfe Castle, wreathed in autumn mist, is at its most atmospheric.
Autumn on the plate
The day boats keep landing and the Kitchen Garden keeps giving - autumn here means the best of both. Seafood at its freshest, the garden's late harvest, and a conservatory restaurant made for watching the weather roll across the bay while you eat.
Autumn here is best enjoyed in two parts.
Half the day out in it - boots on, cheeks pink, making the most of the golden light and the turning leaves.
Then spend the other half by making your way slowly indoors, where the fires are lit and nobody's in a rush to move you along.
