Negroni Week at THE PIG-in the South Downs

We’re big fans of a Negroni. There’s something about that lovely mix of bitter, sweet and boozy that just works – and Negroni Week is the perfect excuse to have a little fun with it.

At THE PIG-in the South Downs, Taylor and his bar team decided not to stop at the classic. Taylor is a big Boulevardier fan (that’s a Negroni with bourbon instead of gin), so he set the team a challenge: get stuck in, get creative and come up with your own take on one of the greats.

And they certainly did.

Negroni Week (5)

Matthew went for a White Negroni, bringing together vanilla and lavender-infused vodka, Licor 43, Suze and Lillet Blanc, with Cocchi Americano and an acid-adjusted butterfly pea tincture. It’s a long way from the classic red Negroni, but still has that all-important balance of bitter, sweet and boozy.

Millie took things in a rather delicious direction with her Rum and Raisin Negroni, made with Foursquare Spiced Rum, sultana-infused Campari, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, Cocchi Americano and chocolate bitters. Think rich, spiced and a little bit nostalgic, with enough bitterness to keep things nicely balanced.

Then there’s Taylor’s creation: the Ceramic Turkey Aged Mega Boulevardier. A proper labour of love made with Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, Cocchi Barolo, vintage Campari and regular Campari. It’s pre-batched, aged and poured from a vintage Wild Turkey ceramic turkey decanter. Because if you’re going to make a Boulevardier, you might as well have a bit of fun with it.

There’s plenty of work that goes on behind the scenes too – from infusing and ageing to getting every little element just right. The team really got stuck in, and all that tinkering paid off.

To put the drinks through their paces, Simon Hunt, CEO of Campari, popped down to THE PIG-in the South Downs to give all three a try. Happily, they all got the seal of approval.

Three drinks, three very different ideas and one very good excuse to celebrate the Negroni. We’re rather proud of what Taylor and the team came up with.
