a getaway to the south downs
a trip away doing very little (or a lot!)
When you roll up to THE PIG-in the South Downs, the world slows down, and that's just how we like it.
Tucked into the National Park, surrounded by chalk hills, ancient woodland and some of England's best vineyards, this is a PIG made for proper country days - rambles on the Downs, glasses of something local as the sun goes down, and just enough history and coastline nearby to make a long weekend feel like a proper escape. Best of all, it's under two hours from London.
Not sure how to spend your time at THE PIG? Here's a taste of what your weekend might look like…

8am
Slow mornings made better
Wake up to the sound of birds chirping, leaves rustling, or maybe even the gentle bleat of sheep in the distance (we do love a rural soundtrack in the morning!).
Ease into the day with a cuppa in bed, or better yet, pull on your wellies and wander out into the garden while the world’s still quiet.

9am
Breakfast worth waking up for
Fuel your day with a proper PIG breakfast. From eggs fresh from our hens to our famous grazing table loaded with locally sourced cheeses, jams, and baked goodies, there’s something for everyone.
Feeling cheeky? Add a Bloody Mary for a little morning spice - it’s a PIG favourite!

11am
Take a peek into our veg beds
After breakfast, it’s time to get stuck into the good stuff - our Kitchen Gardens! Join our free daily tour with our Kitchen Gardeners and see what’s sprouting, blooming, or ready for picking.
Depending on the season, you might spot plump tomatoes in the polytunnels, vibrant chard in the veg patches, or rows of crunchy kale ready to be snipped.

12:30pm
Coffee & castles
A short drive away, Arundel is hard to resist - all flint walls, a towering castle and a river worth wandering alongside. Pop into one of the town's bakeries or coffee shops for a bite to eat (a slice of cake and a strong coffee never goes amiss!), browse the antique shops, or simply potter before heading back to THE PIG.

2pm
Time to stretch those legs
Afternoons here are made for exploring, and there's plenty to see right on our doorstep. The South Downs Way passes close by, perfect for a bracing stomp with views that go on for miles - or take it slower with a gentle ramble through ancient woodland and flint villages.
Fancy something with a glass in hand instead? Our own vineyard surrounds the house, and a handful of England's best - Wiston Estate, Tinwood, Nyetimber - are all within twenty minutes. This is wine country, and we're right at the heart of it. Prefer the coast? Arundel's riverside walks and towering castle are ten minutes away, with Chichester's Roman history and cathedral a little further on, and the open coastline beyond that.

4pm
Unwind in the Potting Shed
Tucked away in the Kitchen Garden, you'll find our homely wooden huts brimming with charm and calm: our Potting Shed treatment rooms.
From soothing massages to bespoke facials, these rustic retreats are the perfect spot to recharge your batteries and simply be.

5pm
Feet up, glass in hand
Back at THE PIG, it’s time to put your feet up. Head to your room for a bit of downtime or settle into a comfy corner in the bar with a book, a board game, or a cheeky tipple (or two!).

7pm
Feast like a PIG
Dinner here is the main event, and our chefs don’t mess about! Our 25 mile menu showcases the very best of what’s in season - you’ll find zero-mile mushrooms, just-landed seafood, and dishes packed with flavours that celebrate our surroundings.
Need help picking the perfect wine to pair with your meal? Our sommeliers are on hand with plenty of recommendations and a good story or two about what’s in your glass.

10pm
Fancy a nightcap?
After dinner, why not stay a little longer in the bar and enjoy a nightcap? When it’s finally time to call it a night, head back to your room for a quiet end to the evening.

11pm
Settle in for the night
Before you turn in, step outside for a moment - the South Downs has some of the clearest, darkest skies in the country, and on a clear night the stars here are something else. Some of our rooms have outdoor bathtubs, so you can lie back and take them in properly, or simply wrap up and wander the garden for a few minutes before bed. Then it's back to your big squishy bed, drifting off with the sounds of nature as your lullaby - sweet dreams come easy at THE PIG.

The Next Morning…
We like to take time to savour the good stuff round at our place - and you deserve to do the same. Wake up to another slow start, graze from our breakfast tables, and relish the chance to relax a little longer.
Before you go, there's still time for one more wander - perhaps a final glass at the vineyard, a browse round Petworth's antique shops, or one last stretch of the Downs. Whether you're packing up or staying put to make the most of the South Downs, the rest of the weekend is yours.
