Leave the week behind in the South Downs
(because planning is overrated)
Some of the best weekends start with a last-minute decision. A gap in the diary, a sudden urge to get out of London, a bottle of something good waiting to be opened.
THE PIG-in the South Downs is four miles from Arundel, high up in the West Sussex hills, with 4,000 vines growing outside the greenhouse restaurant and the South Downs rolling out in every direction. No agenda required.
The kind of few days you didn't plan, but ended up being your favourite.
We're often asked which PIG to book for a spontaneous stay. The South Downs has a way of making the decision for you.
Big skies, chalk hills, one of England's most underrated market towns on the doorstep and a wine list that takes English sparkling very seriously. Pack a bag, point the car south and leave the rest to us.

24 unplanned hours at
THE PIG-in the South Downs

Morning
Wake up slowly. The views from the main house look straight out over the vineyard and the rolling hills beyond - worth pausing over with a cup of tea before breakfast. The grazing table is ready when you are, no need to book, no rush to be anywhere.

Late morning
Pull on your boots and head out onto the South Downs Way - it passes practically on our doorstep. A few miles of chalk path, big skies and the kind of quiet that takes about twenty minutes to properly sink in.
Or drive the four miles down to Arundel - wander the High Street, browse the antique shops on Tarrant Street, pick up a tasting at Digby Fine English Wines on the High Street, and follow the River Arun south for a flat, easy walk back through the valley.

Lunch
Back at the house, the greenhouse restaurant is the best seat in the building - floor to ceiling glass, vineyard views and a 25 Mile Menu that changes with what's been picked that morning. Take your time. Linger as long as you like.

Afternoon
A treatment in the Potting Shed, tucked away in the kitchen garden. Or if you'd rather be out - Goodwood is a short drive, Tinwood Estate does excellent vineyard tours nearby, and Arundel Wetland Centre runs boat safaris through the reed beds that are better than they sound.

Evening
A cocktail in the bar before dinner. The wine list here leans hard into English sparkling - the same chalk under your feet as Champagne, and producers within a short drive who are giving France a very good run for their money.
Dinner in the greenhouse as the light fades over the vines. A nightcap. Bed.

The Next Morning…
Wake up slowly - again. The grazing table is ready when you are and the kitchen garden tour runs at 11am if you'd like to see what's growing before you go.
Then either check out slowly or, if you booked an extra night, do the whole thing again.
Easy come, easy go

Experience nature right on your doorstep...
The best way to experience summer at THE PIG? In rooms where the outside comes in. All with views that make you want to stay in bed a bit longer, terraces for your morning coffee, and that feeling of waking up somewhere special.
Here are our favourite rooms for a summer stay - from our woodland hideaways, to our garden wagons and our perfectly romantic hideaway cabins!
Our patch - the South Downs and beyond
Four miles from Arundel. Everything else within easy reach.
A medieval castle, a Gothic cathedral, independent antique shops along Tarrant Street and Digby Fine English Wines on the High Street for a tasting. The Black Rabbit pub sits right on the River Arun with views back up to the castle and one of the best beer gardens in the county. The farmers market runs on the third Saturday of each month.
England's newest national park starts practically at our back gate. The chalk paths are well marked and the views from the ridge justify every step.
The WWT centre on the edge of town runs boat safaris through the reed beds. Kingfishers, otters, water voles - well worth an afternoon.
Motor circuit, racecourse, sculpture trail and some of the best events in the south in the summer calendar.
And if you're planning ahead...
There's always something worth booking in the South Downs.
